He has often been given a family or couple to interview when he was consulting to hospitals and clinics training their staffs. His approach was labeled Creative Therapy because he adapts the therapy to the needs of the client, rather than try to fit the person, couple or family into a preconceived methodology.

A Chiropractor who referred a family for family therapy reported that the client told him, "The other therapists we went to seemed as though they had read the book. Jay treats us as though he has written the book." (That was before How to Make Friends With Your Feelings was published.)
